PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan recently announced that any fan who yells out: “Brooksy” during a PGA Tour event will be immediately escorted from the grounds. This unique expression is the product of a Brooks Keopka / Bryson DeChambeau feud that has been going on for several months. The derision is directed only towards DeChambeau, as between the two, Koepka is the clear favorite among boorish American golf fans – especially those who are heavy “day-drinkers”.
This was an extraordinary move for a commissioner of any sport. In recent years, all major sports have rightly banded together to ensure that any racial or homophobic terms or expressions from fans or competitors be punished in a significant manner. But the singling out of one specific derisive term for one specific player is unprecedented. I am not saying it’s wrong. No person should have to endure harassment in his or her place of work.
The bigger question is whether DeChambeau was made aware of Monahan’s plans before the announcement. I wonder if he was on board with this decision. It’s kind of like when a kid goes to their teacher to complain about being teased in the schoolyard. The teacher can hand down a swift mandate to quit picking on little Billy, but we all know what happens next.
I worry now about a situation in which DeChambeau is chasing a major tournament down the stretch. I could imagine some “fans” deciding that they have already seen most of the day’s action and heck, the beer stand is now closed anyway. So why not a few well-timed “Brooksy’s” for the road?
Now that Monahan has handed down this unique decree, why stop there? Other on-course misdemeanors which affect far more people and are equally deserving of punitive action. May I suggest that any fan in attendance of a PGA Tour event yelling any of the following: “Get in the hole”, “Mashed potatoes” or “Baba Booey” be immediately shown the exit. I’m not suggesting they be tackled and handcuffed by security staff in the same manner as a miscreant who runs onto the fairway or green….but I wouldn’t complain if they did.
